Herceg Novi is located on the shore of the Bay of Kotor, the Adriatic Sea. The city lies in a valley at the foot of Mount Orien. Due to the hilly terrain in Herceg Novi, there are many steep paths and stairs, which is why it is called the “city of a thousand steps”.
The city was founded as a fortress in 1382 by the Bosnian king Tvrtko I. The most famous sights of the city are the sea fortress (Forte Mare), built by the Bosnian king Tvrtko I in 1382, the Clock Tower, built by the Austrians in the XNUMXth century, the Bloody Tower (tour. Kanli-Kula), built during the Turkish occupation, and the Orthodox Church of Michael the Archangel in Belavista Square, designed in the spirit of eclecticism.
In the city there is a Russian cemetery restored in 2007, where the generals and officers of the Russian army who emigrated to Yugoslavia after 1917 are buried, and a small monument is erected in honor of all Russians who found eternal peace in the land of Montenegro. For the lush vegetation and the abundance of relict trees and shrubs, Herceg Novi is called the "Botanical Garden of Montenegro." In his own Botanical Garden regularly hosts flower celebrations, the most famous of which is the Mimosa Festival.
