New Year is celebrated here with pleasure! This is a great occasion for another festive feast with your family with delicious food and drinks.
Instead of a Christmas tree, it is customary to decorate a badnyak - a young oak tree. On New Year's Eve, as a rule, everyone first gathers at the festive table, and after midnight they go for a walk and congratulate neighbors and random passers-by. Just like ours! Only there is no New Year's speech of the president, because on New Year's Eve it is generally not customary to watch TV here.
Instead of the familiar to us Santa Claus comes to children - Grandfather Mraz. And he comes alone, without his Snow Maiden.
And in Montenegro, they believe that poultry dishes on the New Year's table are a bad omen - happiness will "fly away" from home. Moreover, January 2 is Chicken Christmas time. Domestic chickens are fed all the best, they raise toasts to their health and in no case are they eaten.
On the first night of the year in Montenegro it is customary to guess. Moreover, not only young girls are guessing at grooms, but in general everything. Everyone is interested to whom the new year will bring success, and to whom new love. One of the most popular fortune-telling is on pumpkin. The first guest who comes into the house must smash a pumpkin on the threshold. If there are a lot of seeds in it and they scattered throughout the house, then the whole next year the family will live in abundance.
New Year's Eve festivities are held in all major cities. In Budva - near the walls of the Old Town, and in Podgorica - on the Republic Square. After midnight, everyone who dined at home goes out to the central city squares, and some walk here from the evening. From about 00:30 theatrical performances begin, fireworks are thundering, and everyone congratulates each other on the holiday.
