Excise taxes on tobacco, sugar and carbonated drinks will be raised in Montenegro from July 1

The Government of Montenegro approved a bill amending the Law on Excise Duty, which increases excise taxes on alcoholic beverages, tobacco and products with added sugar.

If the Parliament of Montenegro passes this law, then the prices of these goods will rise from July 1, 2021.

The law provides for an increase in the excise tax on finely chopped tobacco from 45 to 55 euros per kilogram, and the excise tax on other smoking tobacco will be increased from 25 to 35 euros per kilogram.

For carbonated drinks with added sugar or other sweeteners or flavors, including cocoa and ice cream, the excise tax will be increased from 25 to 35 euros per hectoliter. It is planned to introduce a new type of excise products - excise taxes on sugar, cocoa and ice cream, which will be paid at the rate of 0,6 euros per kilogram.

The Montenegrin government expects that the increase in the excise tax on tobacco and tobacco products and the introduction of a new excise product will increase budget revenues by about 16,8 million euros.
