The walls will be cleaned by sandblasting. The authorities will allocate 20 thousand euros for this. The last time the work was carried out 15 years ago.
The fortress walls were built mainly in the Byzantine era, between the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries. However, the current appearance is largely the result of the influence of the Venetian Republic from the XNUMXth to the XNUMXth centuries. Confirmation of this is a large bas-relief with a coat of arms in the form of a winged lion as a symbol of St. Mark, the patron saint of Venice.
The walls were repaired during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The citadel as a separate fortification inside the city was of particular importance at that time. In addition to wells, residential buildings and military units, there were secret underground passages and ammunition depots in the fortress.
