Easter in Montenegro: traditions

Easter (in Montenegrin - Vaskrs or Uskrs) is one of the main holidays for Christians. In Montenegro, this day is especially solemn and bright. On the eve of the holiday, I would like to talk about the traditions and features of the celebration of Easter in Montenegro.

Christ is Risen!

On the day Easter In Montenegro, it is customary to exchange traditional wishes: people say to each other “Christ is Risen!” (Christos Vascrese!, and in response they hear - “Truly Risen!” (Vaistinu se voskrese!). Another option is the phrase "Sretan Uskrs" (Sretan Usrks). It is also customary in Montenegro to wish each other health, happiness and prosperity.

The main sign of the holiday is the tradition already familiar to us - the coloring of eggs. In Montenegro, eggs are dyed red, which symbolizes the blood of Christ. Together with painted eggs, Easter cakes are baked - sweet cakes in the form of a circle or a cube coated with egg glaze. It is worth noting that local Easter cakes do not contain raisins and nuts. Instead, they are sprinkled with candied fruits, dried apricots or other dried fruits.

In many families, eggs are dyed in bright colors, using various natural dyes, such as onion skins, beets or herbs. Beautifully decorated eggs are then placed on the Easter table, where they become a symbol of renewal and resurrection.

Worship in churches

At Easter, services are held in churches. In particular, in the capital of Montenegro - Podgorica - a large festive event is being organized. worship, which gathers many parishioners. Some parishioners bring their Easter eggs to church to bless them during the service.

After the service, the real feast begins. All residents of Montenegro gather at the table, exchange Easter eggs and serve Easter cakes to each other. Usually this festive table is decorated with greenery and flowers, as well as beautiful tablecloths and dishes.

Traditions associated with Easter in Montenegro

Another tradition associated with Easter in Montenegro is the egg fight. Like ours, all guests and family members compete to see whose egg is the strongest.

In addition, on this day, many residents of Montenegro travel around the country to congratulate relatives and friends on the holiday. Usually on this day the doors of each house are open for guests, and everyone is invited to dinner.

The festive dinner usually includes lamb and egg dishes, as well as sweets and Easter cakes.

In addition to gatherings in the home circle, many social events are also held on Easter in Montenegro. Holiday concerts, fairs and festivals are organized in cities and villages, where you can taste national dishes, listen to folk music and take part in various games and amusements.

Thus, Easter in Montenegro is an important holiday, which is celebrated with great joy and respect for traditions. This day is a symbol of spring, renewal and resurrection.
