Montenegro has significantly improved its position in the index of economic freedom

The Heritage Foundation has published the 2021 Index of Economic Freedom. The ranking is based on data for 2019 and the first half of 2020, as well as data on the average budget deficits of countries over the past three years.

Montenegro improved its position by 11 places in the ranking of 178 countries thanks to the reforms completed in the first half of 2020. Thus, Montenegro is ranked 80th, improving its position in the group of moderately free countries.

Montenegro's economic freedom is estimated at 63,4 points, which is currently higher than the global average. Areas for improvement relate to financial well-being, government spending, labor freedom, business freedom, monetary freedom, government integrity, and judicial efficiency.

Fewer points were scored by Montenegro in terms of free trade, tax burden and property rights. This indicates the need to continue reforms in order to further improve the regulatory framework, strengthen the rule of law and public finance.
